A contented team of workers are more productive, inspired and take less time off sick. They will also be more loyal, less likely to seek other employment, and be prepared to put in extra hours when needed.

Here are our top four benefits of keeping your employees happy.

Happy employees are more likely to stay in their job

Replacing employees can be expensive, especially in fields where training is the key to success. Also, customers establish relationships with your employees, and, if they were to move to the competition, the customer might follow them. Statistics show that workers who feel that their work is meaningful are three times more likely to remain in their job than those who feel that their tasks are without real reason.

Happy employees are less likely to ask for raises

Keep your employees happy by paying fairly. Compare rates of pay for similar jobs with other companies and make sure that you are offering the same or more. Studies reveal that only 41% of happy employees ask for raises, compared to 54% of those who are not happy in the workplace. Other ways to reward your employees financially, such as profit sharing or bonuses and benefits could be the answer. 78% of employees who are in good health thanks to a comprehensive health program say that they are happy with their job, compared to only 51% in poor health.

Happy employees are more likely to enjoy job satisfaction

Keep your employees happy by handing out praise when due. Be sensitive to the way each person likes to have their efforts recognized. Some people like a public expression of appreciation, while others may prefer a discreet pat on the back. Make sure that everyone knows that their efforts are valued and important. Job satisfaction is one of the major contributors to employee happiness, so be sure to take the time to make sure they know just how important they are. Employees who experience job satisfaction are likely to be 1.4 times more engaged in their job.

Happy employees work better as a team

Although happy workers take fewer breaks and visit the bathroom less frequently that does not mean that breaks should be discouraged. Regular breaks can increase productivity if they are used constructively, rather than as an escape from work.  An early break with coffee and healthy snacks will boost the energy levels of those who skipped breakfast and encourages comradery between employees.  Employees who feel part of the team are more likely to work extra hours or forgo days off when a project deadline is approaching. Having good working relationships with co-workers also encourages employees to be more thoughtful, considerate and respectful, which makes for a more relaxed, fun and productive workplace.
